Amsterdam Seed Supply began in 2002 in an attempt to save some of the fast disappearing ‘old-school’ genetics once the main-stay of the New Zealand/South Pacific cannabis seeds industry. New Zealands main crop up until the 1990’s involved a blend of genetics, mainly sativa, and Haze types bought back during the 70’s by travellers first discovering country’s such as Mexico, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Burma and Cambodia. These cannabis plants were typically tall, fast growing sativas that flourished in N.Z’s warm/wet climate and long autumn periods.
Cannabis seeds from Amsterdam
After years of selective breeding these original strains of cannabis seeds were transformed into names once so familiar to the N.Z smoker and grower. Names such as ‘Tepuke Thunder’ and ‘Coramandel Gold’ were common and when tested were shown to have some of the highest THC content of any outdoor plants anywhere. NZ quickly developed a name for itself as being one of the finest outdoor cannabis producers in the world.
What types of cannabis seeds are there?
Amsterdam Seed Supply has been leading the world in medical cannabis seed production. Our collection includes an extensive variety of cannabis seeds that can be used for treating several medical conditions. Different Types of Cannabis Seeds
The different types of cannabis seeds available in the market have drastically changed since the 90’s. Before, growers could only choose between indicas, sativas or hybrids in their regular version. Seed banks and breeders have done an amazing job investigating and creating new seeds. Nowadays, there is an unbelievable offer that adapts to anyone interested in cannabis.
Types of cannabis seeds
Indica strains stand out for their optimum yield/ life cycle ratio. They are, in general, more productive than sativas and need less time to complete their development, which is also shorter. Their main advantage is that these types of cannabis seeds grow very dense buds, but that also makes them more prone to mold, specially in humid and hot areas.
Cannabis species differentiate from each other in the characteristics they display during the different growth phases. Indica seeds grow into a spruce shape that reminds us of a Christmas tree. A good way to increase the yield is to use LST techniques or perform apical prunes to make sure light reaches all the parts of the plants equally. Dark green tones and wide leaves give indicas away.
Their short height makes these types of seeds perfect for indoor cultivation or small spaces. Although, their short flowering cycle also makes them ideal for outdoors, as they’ll be ready before first frosts.
Sativa cannabis is less productive than indica plants, which will require growing more plants in order to get the same amount. However, the buds are more spongy anr airy, which grants them greater resistance against humidity and mold. THC levels are higher in sativa seeds and effects are more mental and energetic. This quality plus their exotic and tropical flavors, make sativas very popular among growers.
Just like the buds, the entire plant is stretchy and airy. The light green leaflets are quite apart from one another. Due to their height and the amount of space they need, growing sativas indoors or in balconies is always challenging, as they require pruning techniques to modify vertical growth to horizontal.
Hybrid seeds are a combination of two different genetics, usually sativas and indicas, in order to improve strains’ characteristics. Hybridization’s goal is usually to shorten sativas’ flowering period and promote larger yields with dense and harder buds or grant indicas with exotic flavors and aromas.
Seed banks are constantly hybridizing strains to get new varieties and offer the best possible choices to their clients. When crossing two strains, you get different phenotypes, which essentially are plants with different characteristics but the same genes. Banks then choose the ones that meet the traits they are trying to stabilize and offer the best version.
Ruderalis seeds are less known because seed banks don’t usually sell them. They only use them as part of hybridization processes. A Ruderalis crossed with another type transforms the resulting seed into autoflowering once it is fully stabilized.
Ruderalis cannabis is a wild plant that originated in the coldest areas of north Europe, Central Russia and Siberia. The short hours of sunlight and constant frosts forced these types of plants to adapt to the environment and flower despite lack of light and harsh weather.
These types of seeds have THC levels lower than 3% and grow very little in comparison to other strains. They are compact, hefty and resistant and have a mere weed appearance. Buds are small and fat but their poor THC and CBD levels doesn’t pose any commercial interest apart from hybridizing it to obtain autoflowering plants.
Other types of marijuana seeds
Apart from all the cannabis species that exist according to the type of marijuana seed they come from; cannabis can also be classified in other ways according to their photoperiod dependence, gender or THC and CBD levels.
Regular seeds were the first ones used for cannabis cultivation. Their main characteristic is that they can germinate into male and female plants. This used to be a problem for people that wanted to get large yields out of their crops because these types of seeds used to turn male 90% of the time.
Males produce the necessary pollen for females to create seeds, which can then turn into new plants, but they also produce flowers. A pollinated female will yield poor quality buds full of seeds. A way to prevent this was to get rid of the male plants once they were identified. Currently, these types of seeds are limited to growers or seed banks that create their own hybrids.
Feminized seeds have been modified so that they are incapable of creating male chromosomes, growing only the female plants that produce flowers. Feminizing any type of marijuana seed is a difficult task that requires a lot of time and try-outs to ensure consistency and stability and be able to sell them as feminized varieties.
This process is nowadays 99.9% guaranteed, therefore, there is always a small possibility to germinate a male plant. However, any type of feminized seed is always a better option than a regular one for rookie growers. This way, growers avoid learning to differentiate male from female plants and be on the alert to remove the male plants on time. They also assure obtaining buds at the end of the cultivation process with just basic care.
Autoflowering seeds change phases regardless of their surrounding characteristics. They are auto programmed to enter the flowering period after a certain amount of growth weeks. They are very easy to grow because they can develop even with just a few hours of daily sunlight. As a matter of fact, they are very resistant to light pollution, which means interrupting their hours of darkness won’t affect them.
These seeds are perfect to start gaining growing experience or for people that don’t have enough time to dedicate to their plants. Of course, proper care will increase the final yield.
Autoflowering seeds are created by crossing a regular or feminized seed with a Ruderalis. This way, the new seeds will have a shorter life cycle, the plants will be smaller, more resistant and capable to flower under nearly any circumstance. These plants are ready for harvest 10-12 weeks after their germination. Although they are less productive than feminized, it compensates with the amount of autoflowering crops that can be carried out throughout the year.
All the different types of cannabis seeds of CBD have the same characteristics as feminized, regular or autoflowering seeds but with CBD levels higher than usual. On plenty of occasions THC levels are lowered to the maximum in order for the strains to be used for medical purposes.
However, these seeds aren’t suitable to make CBD based products because their THC levels are never as low as required by current regulations; which is at this moment 0.2%. Hemp seeds are more suitable for that purpose. Either way, CBD-rich marijuana seeds produce more relaxing and de-stressing effects than other seeds.
Contrary to CBD seeds, these types of cannabis seeds do have THC levels lower than 0.2%; therefore, CBD content is predominant. Also called industrial hemp, these seeds are ideal to extract CBD and create products for therapeutic uses. However, CBD levels provided by hemp seeds will never be as high as the one provided by CBD seeds.
Industrial hemp seeds aren’t suitable only to extract cannabidiol. Hemp plants are perfect to make resistant fibers for the textile industry, paper, insulating elements, ropes, motor fuels, paint, cosmetics, etc. Hemp seeds can be ingested in oil form, full, raw, toasted or in flour.
Fast version seeds
Just like CBD seeds, these types of cannabis seeds have the same characteristics as other marijuana seeds but their growth cycle is shorter than usual and they are intended to be harvested before October frosts.
Plenty of these seeds complement each other. Sativas, indicas, hybrids or Ruderalis can also be feminized, regular, autoflowering or fast version. Hemp seeds are only sativas.
What are the Different Types of Weed?

Weed is all derived from the plant, Cannabis, but the different species can have very different effects on people.
There are several different types of weed, or marijuana. Marijuana refers to the dried seeds, stems, leaves or flowers of the plant Cannabis. The specific type of weed is defined by the way the plant is prepared and what kind of Cannabis plant it is.
The main active ingredient in weed is the chemical Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. THC has psychoactive effects, meaning that it can alter mood, alertness, cognizance and cognitive functioning. Cannabidiol or CBD is also a large component of weed plants and has relaxation effects but does not have the psychoactive effects of THC. CBD is also thought to relieve pain.
Different Kinds of Weed Have Different Effects
The strongest types of weed tend to have a higher ratio of THC to CBD, meaning there is a lot of THC but not much CBD. When the ratios are more even, CBD can counteract the effects of THC. Therefore, the level of both chemicals in a strain of weed determines what effect it has on a person.
What types of weed are there? There are two major types of weed, which are determined by the species of Cannabis plant they are derived from. While weed originally came from these two strains, there are now hundreds of other hybrid strains that are a mix of the two.
Article at a Glance:
- Indica and sativa are the main types of weed that come from the cannabis plant.
- Indica is known for its relaxing effects, while sativa has energizing effects.
- Popular strains of weed include Sour Diesel, Purple Kush and Blue Dream.
- Hybrid strains of weed can provide both relaxing and energizing effects.
- Although marijuana has been approved for some medicinal uses, it can also have dangerous side effects.
Major Types of Weed and Effects
The two major types of weed come from two different species of the Cannabis plant: Cannabis indica and Cannabis sativa. The different types of weed vary based on both the type of weed plant they come from and also in the effects they have on a person or the type of high that they give.
Recently, a third strain, Cannabis ruderalis, has also been used to make weed. It has lower levels of THC and is primarily used for medicinal marijuana. Additionally, hybrid strains have been made that are a mix of the two major species.
People who use marijuana will generally choose to use a type of weed based on the effect they want to have. While each type is known for its different effect, one person’s experience may vary greatly from another’s. The route of administration (i.e. smoking or eating) can also greatly influence the effect the type of weed will have.
While every person’s experience is different, there are some general effects associated with each strain:
Cannabis indica originated in the Hindu “Kush” region, near Afghanistan. Because it comes from a cold, mountainous climate, it tends to be shorter and have the appearance of a bush. The leaves are darker, fuller and rounder than the sativa plant. The buds tend to grow in clumps.
C. indica produces large amounts of THC and low levels of CBD and, therefore, it is considered a strong weed. It tends to be very relaxing or sedating, sometimes making people who consume it want to just hang out on the couch. For this reason, it is commonly used at night before going to bed. It creates more of a “body high” due to its relaxing effects.
Because of its sedative effects, indica is often used by people who experience insomnia. A recent study showed that more people found relief from insomnia and pain when using the indica strain, compared to sativa. This effect may be a result of the higher levels of THC.
Cannabis sativa originates from warmer climates, such as Mexico and South Africa, and tends to grow very tall with long, thin leaves. It will flower under certain light conditions, which requires darkness for more than 11 hours a day.
C. sativa has lower levels of THC compared to indica, and higher levels of CBD, giving it more equal levels of both chemicals. The sativa strains have energizing effects, and people often consume weed from these strains in the morning or afternoon. Some people claim that the strain allows them to focus more and be more creative. C. sativa is also described as giving a cognitive or “head high” versus the body high that is felt with indica.
Due to its mood lifting and energizing effects, sativa tends to be used by people who have depression or exhaustion. It has also been described to relieve some of the symptoms of ADHD and other mood disorders.
Hybrid strains are made by cross germinating the seeds of the two common strains of Cannabis in an attempt to produce effects of both. Most strains commonly grown today are hybrids rather than pure indica or sativa.
The hybrids are usually described based on the dominating effect they have. For example, a sativa-dominant strain will be more likely to provide energizing effects and a head high.
Cannabis ruderalis is another species that was first discovered in southern Russia. C. ruderalis grows shorter than the other two species of weed and has thin, fibrous stems with large leaves. It is also an autoflowering plant, meaning that it will flower depending on the age of the plant rather than the light conditions.
C. ruderalis has very low levels of THC compared to the other weed strains, making it rarely used for recreational purposes. It is more commonly used in medicinal marijuana.
Common Types of Weed Strains and Effects
There are certain types of weed strains that are more common than others and some that are coveted for their extraordinary effects. With the ability to make hybrids that blend the effects of both indica and sativa strains, there are now “designer strains” of weed that are bred for maximum quality.
New types of weed sometimes have interesting names, which are usually based on their effects, origin, or the way they appear or smell. Some examples include: Purple Urkle, Willy’s Wonder, Permafrost, Pineapple Express, Strawberry Cough and Island Sweet Skunk.
he following are some of the most common or coveted types of weed strains and the effects they are known to have:
Sour Diesel is a type of hybrid strain that mostly has the highly energizing effects of sativa, but also has some of the physical relaxation properties of indica. It is very potent in THC. The high usually results in a head rush.
It is named for the gasoline-like chemical smell that its flowers make. The medium-sized buds have yellowish-green leaves. It tends to have a sour or skunky taste that some people find unpleasant.
Sour Diesel tends to be used by people who have mild stress, anxiety or depression. It has also been reported to relieve body aches and pains. Some people use it to increase their appetite when they are experiencing a reduced desire to eat. In some people, the high from sour diesel can be overwhelming and lead to feelings of paranoia. This is most likely due to its high THC content.
Purple Kush is a pure indica strain that has a full and relaxing body high. It has a high THC composition.
The name “Purple Kush” comes from the color of its purple leaves and the fact that one of the strains it is derived from originated in the Kush region near Afghanistan. It is one of the most popular Kush strains used.
Because of its ability to induce physical relaxation, it is commonly used by people who have chronic pain, depression or anxiety. It is also used by people who want to relieve situational or temporary pain.
Blue dream is another hybrid strain of weed that is slightly sativa-dominant. It gives an energetic cerebral high that can increase motivation and heighten focus. Some people describe it as having relaxing and pain-relieving effects.
Its name comes from the fact that the origin of the strain is unknown, making it like a dream. It has a sweet taste that some describe as similar to blueberries and sugar.
People who have chronic fatigue, depression or a lack of appetite have described blue dream as having therapeutic effects that improve these conditions. People have also described it as relieving chronic pain and migraines.
Key Points: Types of Weed
Not all weed is the same. Here are some general points related to the many different kinds of weed:
- There are two main strains of weed: indica and sativa
- C. indica strains are relaxing and provide a body high
- C. sativa strains tend to be energizing and provide a cognitive high
- There are many variations of hybrid strains that combine aspects of both
Though some strains of marijuana have been described to have therapeutic effects and have been approved for medicinal use, the use of marijuana can result in dangerous side effects. Marijuana can be addictive.
