Full Spectrum vs. Broad Spectrum vs. Isolate CBD Oil: What’s the Difference?
You’ve likely come across a few different options when looking at various CBD products. Full spectrum CBD oil, broad spectrum CBD, and CBD isolate are three common choices consumers come across when shopping for CBD. If you’re new to CBD, you might be wondering what these terms actually mean.
Basically, they’re used to describe what kind of CBD oil is used to produce a product. Each contains CBD and has an array of potential benefits, yet each has a slightly different chemical composition. As a result, you may have an experience with one product that you might not necessarily have with another.
What is the difference between full spectrum and broad spectrum CBD, and what is CBD isolate?
Here we’ll take a deeper look at the different types of CBD—full spectrum vs. broad spectrum vs. isolate—to make it easier to determine which option might be best for you.
What’s the Difference Between Broad and Full Spectrum CBD Oil?
Cannabis is an extremely complex plant, composed of hundreds of different chemical compounds. Over 100 of these compounds have been identified as cannabinoids. The most popular, of course, are CBD and THC—but they’re only a small fraction of the cannabinoid content and chemical profile of cannabis. Other important compounds include terpenes, flavonoids, and essential fatty acids.
We mention these cannabis compounds because they determine the difference between a full spectrum, broad spectrum, or CBD isolate oil.
All these compounds are believed to work harmoniously together to provide what’s known as the “entourage effect.”
What exactly is the entourage effect, and what does it have to do with full spectrum vs. broad spectrum CBD oil?
Let’s take a look.
The Entourage Effect Explained
We’ve mentioned the complexity of cannabis and the harmonious way its contained compounds work together to create the entourage effect.
The entourage effect is commonly defined as “the combined effect of different compounds found in cannabis that work together as a whole to produce a greater effect than if working separately to produce separate effects.”
The three major cannabis compounds that lend to the entourage effect are cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. The idea of the entourage effect is that whole plant extracts often have greater benefits than their isolated counterparts. This is exactly why CBD isolate is considered the “least” beneficial CBD option.
As their names imply, full spectrum and broad spectrum CBD oil both contain a wide range of cannabinoids and other cannabis compounds that could potentially lend to the entourage effect. However, to understand the difference between them and the benefits they might contain, it’s best to understand them individually.
What Is Full Spectrum CBD Oil?
Before CBD oil becomes CBD oil, it must first be extracted from the cannabis plant. Hands down, one of the most popular extraction methods that has quickly become an industry leader is CO2 extraction. It’s safe, sustainable, and results in the cleanest and purest CBD products.
Full spectrum CBD oil is the result of CO2 extraction. The words “full spectrum” refer to the full spectrum of cannabinoids and other compounds found in cannabis associated with the entourage effect.
Full spectrum CBD oil has had zero cannabinoids removed, including intoxicating compounds like THC. The reason for this goes back to the entourage effect. All of the cannabinoids work in unison for the betterment of the whole—THC included.
If you see “full spectrum” on the label, be sure to check out the company’s lab reports. Although the industry has not regulated the terms, a full spectrum CBD oil will most likely have THC in the formula.
That being said, most full spectrum CBD products generally contain less than 0.3% THC, which typically isn’t enough to elicit any psychoactive effects.
There are, however, individuals that can’t tolerate THC or have any THC in their system but might still want to benefit from the entourage effect.
Here’s where broad spectrum CBD might be beneficial. Broad spectrum CBD is very similar to full spectrum CBD except that THC has been removed. This means they still get all the benefits of the entourage effect, minus the THC.
What Is Broad Spectrum CBD Oil?
After initial extraction, some CBD companies opt to remove THC from their products. They will, however, keep the other cannabinoids in the formula. Companies that remove THC from the final product tend to market their products as broad spectrum CBD oil.
The refining process is critical for crafting broad spectrum oil. During this step of the process, unwanted cannabinoids are removed from the formula. Companies are given an option of which cannabinoids are eliminated.
Understanding that many consumers aren’t keen on THC but still want to benefit from the entourage effect, most remove only THC to create broad spectrum CBD oil. Broad spectrum CBD still offers the synergy of the other cannabinoids. The only one missing from the party is THC.
Because the THC has been removed from broad spectrum CBD oil, it’s commonly assumed that it doesn’t lend to the entourage effect.
Here’s the thing, though: Broad spectrum CBD still contains all the other cannabis compounds, including other cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids, meaning it still allows consumers to experience the entourage effect.
Consider this: The only compound that has been removed from a broad spectrum CBD product is THC. All the other beneficial compounds that lend to the entourage effect are still in there—cannabinoids like CBG, CBN, and CBC; terpenes like myrcene, linalool, pinene and limonene; various flavonoids known to support homeostasis and overall wellness—working harmoniously together to create the widely accepted concept of the entourage effect.
Broad spectrum CBD gives consumers all the benefits of the entourage effect without having to consume THC. It’s an excellent choice for those people that can’t or don’t want THC in their system, whether for legal, professional, or personal reasons.
The entourage effect is real. Those that are interested in its benefits but aren’t interested in THC will find that broad spectrum CBD products offer exactly what they’re looking for, including the peace of mind that they’re consuming a 0.0% THC product.
What Is CBD Isolate?
CBD isolate is what it sounds like: Isolated CBD.
To create CBD isolate, the refinement process is taken a step further to remove all other cannabis compounds. This includes other cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and all other plant compounds. The result is a product that is 99%+ CBD. By definition, CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD there is.
Typically, those who choose CBD isolate are sensitive to other cannabinoids. CBD by itself does have its benefits. However, the results may not be as promising as a broad spectrum or full spectrum CBD oil.
When you are purchasing a CBD isolate, make sure it is 99+% pure. Otherwise, there will be traces of other cannabinoids in the formula. Although these numbers are most likely negligible, it does defeat the purpose of seeking out a pure CBD product.
Choosing CBD: Full Spectrum vs. Broad Spectrum vs. CBD Isolate
Wondering what type of CBD might be best for you?
Now that you’ve got an understanding of the difference between full spectrum vs. broad spectrum vs. CBD isolate, it can be easier to determine which form of CBD will fit your personal needs.
When it comes to taking CBD, everyone has different needs. These needs will reflect which type of CBD might be best suited for someone personally, despite the daily serving.
Keep in mind that activation time (how long it will take to feel the effects) and bioavailability (how much CBD is absorbed by the bloodstream) of full spectrum, broad spectrum, and CBD isolate both depend on the type of product being used, not the type of CBD oil one is consuming.
Let’s quickly recap each to see how each might fit the needs of different individuals.
Why Choose Full Spectrum CBD?
This is CBD that contains all cannabinoids and chemical compounds naturally present in cannabis. Full spectrum CBD is believed to best lend to the entourage effect and has gone through the least amount of processing and refinement.
Full spectrum CBD does contain trace amounts of THC. While typically less than 0.3%, THC found in full spectrum CBD oil might still show up on a drug test. Those with acute sensitivities to THC might also find that a full spectrum oil comes with some undesirable effects.
Why Choose Broad Spectrum CBD?
Broad spectrum CBD is CBD oil that has gone through further refinement after extraction to remove THC. Although THC has been removed, broad spectrum CBD oil still lends to the entourage effect. The only thing usually missing from the vast array of cannabinoids and other cannabis compounds is THC.
Because broad spectrum CBD is 0.0% THC, it’s excellent for those with sensitivities to THC or who can’t have THC in their system for whatever reason. Broad spectrum CBD products are a great introduction to the world of CBD for those who might be uncertain about trying a product that contains THC. Broad spectrum CBD products are also beneficial to individuals living in states that still have strict laws concerning the use of THC.
Why Choose CBD Isolate?
CBD isolate is 99%+ pure CBD. It has gone through several refinement processes to remove all other cannabinoids and various plant compounds. This odorless, tasteless form of CBD is considered the purest form of CBD that exists and contains zero probability of any intoxicating effects.
Because all other compounds have been removed to create CBD isolate, this type of CBD does not lend to the entourage effect like a full or broad spectrum product. CBD isolate is typically best for those with extreme sensitivities to THC or other cannabinoids, people living in states with strict THC laws, or CBD newbies who are tentative to use cannabis-based products.

We only use the finest natural ingredients in our tinctures and other products, and our oils have been tested to guarantee safety, purity, and overall quality. We only use extracts, ingredients, and formulations that we would trust for our own families to use in our broad-spectrum CBD. Naternal CBD oil is available in various strengths so that you can choose the best hemp oil for your specific wellness needs.
What Is CBD Oil?
CBD is a natural cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant.
Cannabidiol (CBD) promotes wellness naturally over time. Made with high concentrations of hemp-derived CBD and a unique blend of cannabinoids also extracted from hemp, Naternal CBD oil offers a wide range of potential benefits that can bring you peace of mind.
People use Naternal products when they want a better choice.
Naternal was created for people who are passionate about self-care. We make the highest quality products on the market with beneficial compounds and sell them at prices that make sense. Every product we make comes from a supply chain that we fully control, and they are rigorously tested ( and tested again). We believe our products should be wonderful, even without CBD, and we have carefully chosen extraction processes and base formulations that we’d be proud to use on their own. We understand that every life is different (including our pets), and we’ve built a product line and dosing system that allows you to fully personalize your self-care routine.
Conversely, many CBD brands infuse inferior powders into bulk carrier oils, if they make their own products at all. A lot of them are just digital marketing agencies that pay companies like ours to make their products for them. Such products may also be made using GMOs, pesticides, preservatives, and artificial flavors. Our products are all-natural and only use the essential oils and ingredients for positive effects. Here is a list of some of the natural ingredients that we’re proud to use to create products that are easy to understand (and pronounce).
- Argan oil
- Cocoa butter
- Lavender oil
- MCT oil*
- Menthol crystals
- Shea butter
- Sunflower oil
- Vitamin E
- Cannabidiol (CBD) and other cannabinoids extracted from full-spectrum industrial hemp.

Full Spectrum, Broad Spectrum, and Isolates
Full-spectrum CBD oils contain a wide range of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. These full-spectrum CBD products may also contain trace amounts of THC. Such trace amounts will not be above 0.3 percent, which is still in compliance with state laws. True “broad spectrum” oils are full-spectrum oils that have had the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) removed using chemistry processes, resulting in a truly THC-free product, which is the main difference.
“CBD Isolates” are powders that have been refined to the point where pure CBD is the only ingredient left in the isolate. In other words, full-spectrum products contain as wide a range of cannabinoids as possible, broad spectrum CBD remains completely THC-free, and isolates contain only one isolated ingredient.
Anecdotally, full spectrum products are often described as being most like the plant in its natural form. Broad-spectrum products are close to full-spectrum products but they cannot be full-spectrum because THC content has been taken out. Isolates, just like the name implies, is a CBD (or other) molecule in an isolated form. Unlike full-spectrum products, these are widely considered most unlike the plant in its natural form.
Is a Full Spectrum Product Better Than A Broad Spectrum Product?
Naternal products contain CBD, CBG, and CBN, along with additional terpenes and flavonoids. Our full spectrum products contain trace amounts of THC and our broad-spectrum products do not. We do not make CBD isolate products because we believe the additional cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids add to our product quality and produce greater benefits.
You may hear people refer to the “entourage effect” when discussing the pros and cons of particular products. This is the name given to the concept that cannabinoid compounds work better in formulation with other cannabinoids. While there is ample anecdotal evidence to support this concept (and we agree with it), we are not able to direct you to any legitimate scientific support for these claims regarding the benefits of the entourage effect (largely due to government restrictions on research).
What Are the Benefits of CBD Oil?
The positive effects of CBD are mostly anecdotal at this point, but the popularity of broad-spectrum CBD products has exploded in the United States since the 2018 Farm Bill legalized industrial hemp products at the federal level. While CBD products are effectively legal across the U.S., you may want to check with your state’s laws and local legislation to be completely safe. CBD may also show up on a drug test, although it generally won’t be screened for.
Because CBD products like hemp oil are currently not regulated by the FDA, we cannot make claims about the specific benefits our products may provide. Hence, discovering how CBD can be beneficial for your health and your family’s health is entirely up to you. Fortunately, the science is pretty clear, and studies supporting the benefits of CBD for humans are widely available online. We encourage you to explore how high-quality CBD oil can improve your life. We will be following along, but for now, we can’t fully participate in this part of the conversation.
How Do I Take CBD Oil?
Naternal CBD tinctures can be consumed safely in different ways. Oils are typically taken orally or sublingually with a dropper, meaning CBD drops are placed under the tongue for faster absorption. You may also opt to use your handy dropper to mix a few drops of CBD oil into your favorite beverages, such as your morning coffee, smoothies, and post-workout shakes. This is generally considered the best way for those who don’t enjoy the flavor.
What Is the Right CBD Tincture Strength for Me?
Be wary of anyone who says they know exactly how much CBD you should take. The reality is that the correct dosage of CBD oil varies from person to person, and while we all like the idea of “silver bullets,” it takes time to find the correct CBD dosage and potency for your body. We offer our “Trust the Dose System ™” that uses 20 milligrams as a foundation amount and have found that it is generally the best starting point for beginners. Always take CBD products for a few days to experience their benefits to the fullest.
Naternal’s hemp oil products are formulated to allow you to easily personalize your dose strength. Our 600 mg products allow for 5, 10, 15, and 20 mg doses. Our 1200 mg CBD tincture products allow for 10, 20, 30, and 40 mg doses. Our 2400 mg hemp CBD products allow for 20, 40, 60, and 80 mg doses. We put you in control, so if you are wondering where to buy hemp oil, look no further than Naternal. You may also seek your doctor’s advice when deciding the amount of CBD to take for the first time.

1,500mg Broad Spectrum CBD Oil
Our 1,500mg CBD Oil contains 50mg per 1mL (bottle size is 30mL) and is perfect for those people who have a more serious case or if their body naturally requires higher doses. Our CBD tinctures are mixed with organic MCT Oil (from coconut), a healthy fat called medium-chain triglycerides that converts into energy your body uses. MCT’s also have a variety of health benefits.
Start by using 1-2 servings per day (50-100mg of CBD) for the first 7 days and see how you feel. If you’d like, you may increase the dose slowly. However, if you suddenly don’t notice a difference or effect, it means you built a tolerance. If so, we recommend taking a 3-day break and starting at a slightly lower dose than before and, if needed, increasing the dose slowly to find your optimal dose.

Frequently Asked Questions
How to use this CBD Oil tincture?
Using CBD oil tincture is a breeze. Our measured dropper tells you exactly how much you’re taking, allowing for better dose control.
To take the tincture, just follow these quick steps:
- Gently shake the bottle
- Place dropper inside the oil, then squeeze and slowly release the rubber bulb
- Once you have your desired dose, drop the CBD oil under your tongue
- Hold for 1-2 minutes to allow for full absorption
- Swallow the rest of the CBD Oil
What are the benefits of CBD Oil tinctures?
There’s a long list of benefits with CBD oil tinctures. Some include:
- Precise dosing with our marked droppers
- Easily mixes with drinks, smoothies, and anything else you see fit
- Faster action compared to other oils and edibles
- General wellness for your body and mind
How much of this 1,500mg CBD oil should I use?
This all depends on your case, but you may start with half a dose, which is 0.5mL, or a full dose of 1.0mL.
Start with 0.5mL to 1.0mL for the first 5-7 days, and if needed, you may increase your dose by 0.5mL every 3-4 days per day to find your “sweet spot.”
If you feel you need a higher dose from the start, of more than 1.0mL per day, by all means, you may do that.
One thing to note is that you may build a tolerance to CBD, where the effects are not as noticeable as before or that you don’t feel it at all, and it’s 100% normal. If this happens, take a 2-4 day break, and start back at a lower dose. This will allow your body’s tolerance to reset.
Other CBD dosing tips:
- Take regularly in order for the CBD to accumulate in your system
- Be patient. The best goals take time and precision. Most people notice effects in a few days. A fewer number of people report waiting two to four weeks.
- Avoid consuming on an empty stomach, as research shows food can exponentially improve absorption.
How to know how much CBD you’re taking?
Each 30ml bottle includes a handy dropper with marked measurements at 0.25ml, 0.5ml, 0.75ml, and 1.0ml for precise dosing.
For this 1,500mg CBD Oil:
- 0.25mL contains 12.5mg of CBD
- 0.5mL contains 25mg of CBD
- 0.75mL contains 37.5mg of CBD
- 1.0mL contains 50mg of CBD
How long does it take for CBD Oil tinctures to work?
CBD oil tinctures are the fastest option for oral administration. Unlike regular CBD oil and edibles such as gummies or softgels, tinctures partially absorb through capillaries in the gums, cheeks, and tongue. This allows some of the CBD to directly hit the bloodstream before the rest metabolizes through the liver. As a result, tinctures take effect within 15-20 minutes.
Gummies, conventional oil, and softgels (among others) only go through your digestive tract. It takes a minimum of 30-45 minutes to make the trip from your stomach to the bloodstream.
